“Health isn’t an appointment every 6 months with a provider, it’s everything in-between.”
Functional Medicine & Health Coaching
Functional Medicine treatments rely on patients making lifestyle changes which may include trying new foods, limiting or excluding foods, starting an exercise regimen or increasing exercise, adopting new sleep routines, and including self-care activities and mindfulness. Everyone has habits which are a regular practice for how they do things in their lives, and these tendencies are often hard to give up or modify, especially long term. A health or wellness coach is a trained professional who can support you through behavior changes that will take the knowledge you gained from your functional medicine provider and make those lifestyle changes that lead to success in your healing and well-being goals.
A health coach is sometimes referred to as a wellness coach and may support you through various means which may include weekly appointments either virtually or in-person, texts or calls to check in or provide positive reinforcement on new behaviors as you are implementing them, and someone who can touch base with you if questions arise regarding your treatment program. While the wellness coach is not specifically trained in the scientific details of functional medicine, we recommend working with a health/wellness coach who has gone through a coaching program specifically for functional medicine as they are trained to understand the types of lifestyle changes that will typically be employed by a functional medicine provider and are therefore well-suited to understand where the emphasis is placed in achieving your health goals.
